Chapter Seven

N ow that the election was behind me, I could focus on my life in Fort Lauderdale. I loved our house. It was only a two-bedroom but suited us well, since it had a good layout. The neighborhood was great. I went for runs all of the time out to Wilton Drive. Sampson eventually grew tired of the Fort Lauderdale to Miami commute, due to traffic mishaps – breakdowns, cars dropping furniture. He landed a job as an assistant to a realtor friend in Fort Lauderdale with a ton of properties. The realtor handled foreclosures, a really big business in South Florida. The realtor was overwhelmed by the paperwork and legwork involved. That’s where Sampson came in. Once my husband got busy, the realtor’s seventy properties quickly ballooned to over one hundred.

Regarding my Secret Service work, some sense of normalcy was setting in. I usually ended up only working one weekend a month, when a president from another country would visit South Florida. Or it was my weekend to work the Miami command center. I was enjoying life in Wilton Manors. We were growing closer to our circle of friends. There were still occasional hookups with friends and strangers, but there was no judgement. In our time together as friends, there was not one fight or dramatic episode. The car was beautiful. It was fast for a larger luxury car and way more than we needed, but I loved it. Driving it home from the dealer, I underestimated the power in it. The rear end slid out while turning a corner. Thankfully, I recovered it, but it was a scare for driving a brand-new car. Our friends were all farther along in their careers and therefore more financially secure than we were, but I felt I needed to show them we belonged in the group by driving a car just as nice as the Audis they all drove. We could afford the car, but it was a poor decision on my part, based on insecurities.

Our Fort Lauderdale circle of friends were a family. We were there for each other. Included in the circle of friends was another couple, an older guy and a partner a good bit younger. The older guy was genuinely sweet and intelligent. We went to his house for a pool party one day. It was my first time there. Upon walking
